Day 1

TDWI Data Visualization Principles and Practices

Data visualization has rapidly become a critical part of business analytics and business communications. Without visualization, the numbers and statistics of analytics are difficult to interpret and incomprehensible to many who need to turn data into business insight.

The advent of big data, with the increasing volume and velocity of data, requires visualization as a technique to compress large volumes of data into digestible presentations and to observe streaming data in motion.

Elegant and well-designed data visualizations often appear to be easy because skilled visual developers are able to hide the complexities and the hard work behind the scenes. Data-literate professionals need to communicate as effectively in visual forms as they do with their verbal and written communication skills. Get your team started by learning the fundamentals of data visualization.

Your Team Will Learn:

  • Visualization as a communication medium

  • Preparing data for visualization

  • Components of visualization

  • Choosing and using charts and graphs

  • Visual exploration and analysis

  • Visual design techniques

  • Extending visualization with infographics

  • Visual storytelling

  • Data visualization tools

Day 2

Business Analysis for Everyone with Excel

As more organizations aim to harness the power of data-driven decisions, the demand has soared for data-literate professionals who can dive into and analyze data. In this hands-on course, your team will learn foundational skills to robustly analyze business data and become a valued data detective.

Many find the prospect of gaining data literacy skills intimidating as they assume that learning advanced statistics is required—not true!

In this class you will learn all the fundamentals of robustly analyzing business data using Microsoft Excel. No fancy Excel functions or complex calculations are required.

You team learn a tool as simple as it is powerful: the process behavior chart. The process behavior chart is a visual tool uniquely suited for the data detective that allows your team to answer questions such as:

  • Given historical business performance, what should we reasonably expect to see in the future?

  • We’ve implemented a new business initiative (e.g., an incentive plan). Is the initiative really working?

  • Is the business performance of Division A actually superior to the business performance of Division B?

With your team’s newly acquired skills, they will be positioned to become not only a data-literate detectives but also trusted advisors providing rigorous, compelling insights into the multitude of KPIs, dashboards, and scorecards so common in today’s organizations.

Data Storytelling for Business Impact

The explosion of data has made data visualization a core competency for organizations as insights can no longer be derived from rows and columns.
